Fall Leaf Divider - F2U by MahoHaku

You’ve been travelling for what feels like forever. You stop to rest but are rudely awaken by the sound of wild dogs, they sound pretty vicious and large in number. What do you do?

A] Run, Flee
B] Hide, head for the bushes, then search for shelter.
Fall leaf - F2U by MahoHaku  C] Follow the noise and attack

During one particularly cold autumn morning when the sun had not yet awoken, Ronin, a red dun horse was moving twigs and leaves around with his upper lip in an attempt to tidy his living space. A bird who did not intend to fly south for the winter had been making her nest in the massive tree that served as Ronin’s shelter from the cold. He didn’t mind the bird, nor the sweet songs she sang during the morning as she tidied her home, what he did mind was the mess she made in his home while doing it. Every morning he would wake up, drink a few sips of water from the stream that flowed next to his tree, then clean the space where he slept each night, Ronin didn’t mind the routine, in fact he thrived on it.

Ronin had lived under the massive tree since its flowers started blooming after the last winter, the stream had lead him to this home, he had put away food for the coming winter and ensured that he had enough to last him. The plains where plentiful, but the winter is unforgiving.

His patch of land was finally tidy, his bed of grass was neatly raked together and lady bird’s twigs where outside of his living zone. There was not much more to do there, so he set off to find the berry bush he had seen on one of his many trips around the area. He remembered the map to the specific bush with the off white berries in his mind. Across the stream past the oval rock that stuck into the air, left by the dead tree then straight until the smell of honey was just noticeable.

Yes, life was good for Ronin, he didn’t mind being alone as much as he used to. Being alone was better than being rejected multiply times by multiple herds. He had a plan of starting his own herd before, but he never went far enough to find the right horses. His company now was the lady bird in his tree and the great herd of buffalo that came to his stream once a week for water before they set off to their feeding grounds again.

After eating a good deal of the off white berries, Ronin made his way back to his tree, taking care not to step in his same hoof prints twice. The little berries contained all the sugar he needed to last him until the sun came over the mountains in front of him. He passed the dead tree and the oval rock and found a beautiful patch of green grass near his stream, he knew the winter would arrive soon and kill off anything and everything, so he allowed himself to eat the lush grass. He had lost track of time completely and found himself relaxing in the warm rays of the midday sun. Only half awake.

A crack in the distance made Ronin’s ears pick up, the only thing that could cause a crack like that was a fawn, but they were not due back from across the mountains until the first snow started falling. He heard it again, but a few paces closer this time, unsure of what it could be he moved closer, keeping his head low and ears forward.

Then he smelled something he had only smelled once or twice in his life, wild dogs. They were an unkind animal, attacking anything and everything that had the promise of a warm meal. These wild dogs had no right to be in his territory. Ronin had made an allowance for a family of Bobcats to live in the more rocky areas near his home, and made them promise to prey only on the small animals that made pests of themselves.

His fear was that if anything attacked a creature that he gave sanctuary to in his territory, the word would spread and he would become even less able to create a herd because every other creature would assume that he wasn’t able to protect what is his.

Ronin would make sure that these wild dogs didn’t harm any creature in his territory. The wind was in his favour and the wild dogs, who looked to be chewing on the bones of some poor soul, realised too late that the stallion was within biting distance. Ronin grabbed one by the tail and swung him to the side, leaving it paralyzed and weeping. Just as he was about to kick at a second one behind him it swung around and geared up with two more of the pack. They charged Ronin from his side and his front and he reared up and struck. One of the dogs fell to the ground, another let out a yelp.

This was not Ronin’s first rodeo, and it would surely not be his last.
